Obesity and Foot Pain: Is There a Link?

Many people don’t realize it, but obesity can negatively affect our feet. Not only can it alter foot structure, but it may also lead to arthritis. So in today’s post, Dr. Hubert Lee at CarePlus Foot & Ankle Specialists in Bellevue, WA, is sharing information regarding foot problems that can result from being overweight.

Foot conditions caused by obesity can include, plantar fasciitis, inflammation along the entire foot, and tendonitis. In addition, research shows as people climb steps, the ankle joints feel about four to six times their body weight. This can also occur from climbing a steep incline.

Recent studies have revealed that almost half of the people surveyed have gained weight prior to experiencing foot pain. The ligaments and tendons in the feet are often affected by weight gain, which can make walking challenging.

Obesity has currently become quite problematic and can negatively impact your feet.

Your Feet and Obesity

Because your feet support your entire weight when standing, any added weight can result in swelling and pain. Obesity is one of the main reasons for complications with our feet.

Let’s discuss three of the complications and foot problems associated with it.

Diabetes: Overweight people are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes. This condition has a dramatic impact on your foot health. As you age, your diabetes might get worse, which can lead to sores, bruises, and a loss of feeling in your feet. You could also become more susceptible to various types of infections.

Plantar fasciitis: When you put stress and pressure on your joints, tendons, and muscles, it can trigger plantar fasciitis. This condition occurs when there is an inflammation of the tissue that forms along the sole of the foot.

Extra Weight: Even gaining just a few extra pounds can create serious complications for your feet. And as your weight increases, your body and balance will shift and create new stresses on your feet. In addition, this unequal weight distribution can result in pain, even while doing simple tasks such as walking.
