Common Foot Conditions That Are Often Confused with One Another

Since various foot conditions may present similar symptoms, it’s unfortunately all too easy to mistake them for one another, leading to confusion and incorrect treatments. Below, CarePlus Foot and Ankle Specialists explores a few foot conditions that are frequently confused, helping you understand the differences and how to manage them effectively.

Plantar Fasciitis vs. Heel Spurs

Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs are two common causes of heel pain, but they are not the same condition. Plantar fasciitis refers to inflammation of the thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot, which often causes stabbing pain.

A heel spur is a bony growth that forms on the heel bone. Not all heel spurs cause pain, but when they do, it’s typically localized at the back of the heel.

Bunions vs. Hammertoes

Bunions and hammertoes are both deformities of the toes, but they affect different areas and have different causes. A bunion is a bony bump at the base of the big toe, often due to tight or ill-fitting shoes. It causes the big toe to turn inward, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty walking.

Hammertoes refer to a condition where one or more toes become bent in a claw-like position, often caused by muscle imbalances, arthritis, or wearing shoes that constrict the toes. Hammertoes can develop on any toe.

Tendonitis vs. Stress Fractures

Tendonitis and stress fractures affect different parts of the foot and have distinct causes. Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendons, often caused by overuse, such as excessive walking or running. It commonly affects the Achilles tendon or the tendons along the bottom of the foot.

A stress fracture, on the other hand, is a small crack or break in a bone, usually caused by repetitive stress or overuse. Stress fractures often occur in the metatarsals (long bones in the foot) or the calcaneus (heel bone), causing significant pain.

By being aware of these common foot conditions and their symptoms, you can take the necessary steps to protect your foot health and ensure proper care.
